Why do I need a Laser Protection Adviser?

If you are a Cosmetic Laser Surgeon or Beauty Therapist and you are operating a laser or intense pulsed light source, the Private & Voluntary Healthcare Regulations require you to have access to a certificated Laser Protection Adviser.

While it is not a formal legal requirement for other laser users, the Health & Safety Executive expect that the employer will have taken advice from an appropriately qualified expert on laser safety.

What is the role of the LPA?

Advise the employer as to the precise requirements of the Acts and Regulations;

Assist in the production of Risk Assessments and Local Rules prior to starting work with lasers or IPLs;

Audit local procedures and documentation to check they are adequate;

Assist in the production of, or improvement to, the necessary documentation;

Assist the employer in implementing appropriate work practices;

Liaise with other professionals regarding the introduction of new equipment, premises or uses of lasers.
